On Monday, China’s Personal Information Protection Law also known as PIPL went into effect.

The law passed at the 30th session of the 13th National People’s Congress Standing Committee in August, contains detailed provisions to strengthen personal information protection, particularly for online platform users.

Personal information collection, application, processing, and trading will be strictly monitored, and any related infringements will be punished, according to the law.

When making business decisions using mass personal information, data collectors are prohibited from engaging in discriminatory practices that harm consumers’ interests, such as differentiating prices through user profiling, according to the law.

It also stated that online platforms with a large number of users must develop detailed rules to govern the behavior of parties who provide services through these platforms, as well as set parameters for their data collection and processing activities.
